Objectives

NONARCADICS has 2 main scientific objectives, which serve to enhance the impact of VIOLENDINGS’ objectives:

O1: From a literary perspective, the aim is to arrive at a better understanding of pastoral novels as a genre within the context of Golden Age prose fiction. This objective can be achieved by analyzing the rich panorama of ‘anti-arcadian’ elements contained in these plots, such as non-physical violence, the structures on which it depends, and the complex integration of these elements within the conventions of the pastoral fictions, as well as their evolution from the genre’s inception, with Sannazaro’s Arcadia, to the later pastoral works of the Spanish 17th century.

O2: from a socio-historical and gender perspective, to critically understand the mechanisms by which the social context, the male hegemonic ideology and its forms of non-physical violence were masked within the ideals of pastoral fiction. This objective can be achieved by a) studying the socio historical and ideological context of these works, and b) tracing its relation with the plots’ conflicts, practices of courtship and rhetoric of love.
